About Us
The Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore was established in the year 1852 by the British Government. This College is one of the best Government Institutions in Tamilnadu. Top beaurocrats, administrators, defence personnel and high profile politicians are alumni of this institution. It was conferred autonomous status in the year 1987.
In 2012, the college was re-accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC. Admissions to the college is coveted by students due to the exceptional guidance offered by highly qualified teaching faculty. The ultimate aim of education is to make a person knowledgeable and well informed and offer him / her life skills so that one can earn one’s livelihood. In today’s world it would certainly be myopic to look at any educational programme purely from the job placement point of view. In the present scenario of economic turbulence an educational programme / College that would ensure a long term benefit such as sustainability rather than a short term promise of job placement should be chosen. Government Arts College has been known for its quality education not only pertaining to academics but also overall personality development of the students.
As globalization has reached the education sector, the college has geared up to grab new opportunities, and thus the Tamilnadu State Higher Education Council has entered into collaborations with universities in U.K. These collaborations enable the college to offer students programme in U.K. Universities. So far, many post graduate students have completed the post graduation programme under the foreign study programme. The college also offers a unique Degree course in Defence Studies. A student can pursue this Degree course during Shift II. This Degree course will be a great advantage to all students who aspire for uniformed services.
The teachers use learner – centric teaching – learning methods to cater to the diversity in the aptitudes, intelligence, learning styles and interests of the students. They use non-traditional teaching methods and tools in ICT. Co-curricular and extra- curricular activities including sports are encouraged to ensure multi-dimensional personality development of the learners. Our college has consistently remaining among the Top 3 Government Colleges in Tamilnadu. Research scholars in all the departments are contributing research articles in reputed journals.

Government Arts College started as an Anglo-vernacular school in 1852. It became a first-grade college in 1870 and almost a century later, a post-graduate college in 1964, under the Madras University.[5] The college blazon was adopted as early as 1868 by then Principal C. C. Flanagan. After that it changed, in 1953 as a part of the centenary year celebration and in 1999 after the college was accredited, with four stars.[6

I love my coimbatore my native place then my coimbatore college but my one daughter BA.english lit.studying in our college.but second daughter 2counseling attended but no use no sheet no sheet. current year mark 600/451 ..... So sad but I miss lotts off love ... I love coimbatore college.very experienced professors in college ...my daughter ku sheet kidachruchuu frds 2 daughter um padikaranga enga coimbatore arts college la I love you so much ... I love this college

GAC is a great place to enroll into. You can whole heartedly trust the college. The professors are greatly experienced. Unlike the bad rumors around it, it's a great place to learn things. It is an eco-friendly campus and a clean place. The students are well aware of their responsibility. Things like sports are given equal importance too.

I would say it is one of the best colleges in Tamilnadu, but the pathetic thing is most of the people doesn't know even the existence of this college, but it has the legacy of more than 150 years. I personally spent 3 beautiful years and have memories for my life. This college has around 24 departments of various science and arts stream with more than 15 departments are offering the courses till Ph.D The professors serving here are with excellent experience, qualification and acting as pioneers in their respective fields. Love for this college never ends wherever I move in my life♥️. Thank you GAC, Coimbatore

The college is run by the government under Bharathiyar university. It is one among the oldest college in India. To be Frank with you it was under University of Madras, but the college was started before the university. Previously it was men's college and later on women were inducted in post graduate courses. Now it is co education. It is behind the railway station and near to coimbatore medical college hospital

One of this alumni of this college. Batch 2003 to 2006. Great environment. Historical place. Classrooms constructed by British but now a days not clean. Teaching facilities are friendly, helped and experienced. Quality teaching and pakka time management. நான் ரொம்ப Miss பண்றேன். I missing so much my college life and my friends

One of the oldest college in Coimbatore with a long history and has produced many elite personals. It has many arts and science courses and most of the under privileged are making use of it. Its campus all kinds of students from different colors. Its teaching staff are good ones especially in maths department.

Government arts college with all adequate facilities and technology. Education and coaching are considered not up to the mark and lot of room for improvement. Getting seats in this college is not a tough task. The college is opted as a last resort for admission. Parking facilities available.
