About Us

Registration Department of Government of Tamil Nadu was formed in the year 1864 and has been providing yeomen service to the People for more than 150 years. The activities of the Department have grown manifold over the years and today it fully administers five Acts and partially administers nine Acts.

It is said that Registration Department is one of those rare departments which has established close linkage with the People. This Department is involved in multifarious activities like registration of marriages, births, deaths, sale / purchase / gift/ mortgage / exchange of immovable properties, registration of societies, chit funds, Partnership Firms etc. and it can be safely said that there is not a single resident of Tamil Nadu whose life is not touched by this Department.

The Department is headed by Inspector General of Registration (IGR) whose office is located at Santhome, Chennai. In discharging his responsibilities, the IGR is assisted by four second level officers whose designations and subjects handled by them are as indicated below:

(1) Additional Registrar of Chits – Matters relating to department infrastructure, Chits, Societies and Computerization, etc.

(2) Additional Inspector General of Registration (Guidelines) – Matters relating to guideline value revision, cases under sections 47A (5) and 47A (6) of the Indian Stamp Act, and cases under section 56(2) of the Indian Stamp Act.

(3) Additional Inspector General of Registration (Stamps and Registration) – Matters relating to the Indian Stamp Act, The Registration Act etc.

(4) Additional Inspector General of Registration (Intelligence) – Matters relating to Marriage Registration, audit objections and building inspections.

Registration department, by the very nature of the services provided by it, is a department with very high public contact and interaction. In order to facilitate the public and to ensure easy accessibility, the department has a large number of field offices which are organized under different Registration Zones. There are Nine registration zones in the State and each zone is headed by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Registration. The State is divided into 50 Registration Districts and each district is headed by District Registrar. There are 575 Sub Registrar Offices spread over the State.
