About Government Medical College

Coimbatore Medical College, Coimbatore is a well renowned and established institution in the country. Since its start in the year 1966, the college has emerged as the premier institution in the state to provide an accessible, affordable, high quality, comprehensive health and development system that meets the needs of the people of Coimbatore and its neighbouring districts.

Coimbatore Medical College is situated in the western region of Tamilnadu- Coimbatore, Also known as Manchester of the South. The college is developing into a temple of knowledge with eminent teachers, quality infra structure and adequate clinical materials.

Over the years, the college has stood the test of time and is progressing steadily by offering various undergraduate, post graduate super-speciality and paramedical courses that serves the poor, needy and meritorious students. I foresee a great future for the college and hope that one day it will emerge as a premier medical institution in the country.

For the purpose of information about the progress made so far by the college and its future plans to expand the medical education and health care services, the college is launching its own website. I hope this website will serve its purpose effectively for the public, the various faculties, student community and future aspirants of this prestigious institution.

As an elegant landmark today, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital is situated on Coimbatore to Trichy national highway (NH-67) closer to the Coimbatore Railway station.

Allopathic medical facilities were available for the residents of Coimbatore as early as 1850, well thought-out by distinguished philanthropists of yester years like Thiru. Thiruvenkatasamy Mudaliyar, Thiru.Bashyakarulu Naidu & Thiru.Abbaiya Naidu. In 1850, a dispensary was opened in the Indian quarters of the town nearly opposite to the Koniamman temple and occupied a triangular plot of ground formed by two converging roads with residential quarters at its base (Page 427 of Madras District Gazetteer-Report on Civil Hospital and Dispensary 1900).

In order to expand the facilities, the dispensary was shifted during 1908 from the above mentioned area to the present site in temporary sheds (the present DAS Quarters and adjacent Medical Records Department) opposite to the banks of a clean water lake with tiny waves, frothy and bubbly known as Valankulam. This land with an extent of 19.41 acres on the main road to Trichinopoly was given by the Naikars of Appanaikanpatty. The golden jubilee celebration of the hospital was inaugurated by HIS Excellency Sri.Bishnuram Medhi, Governor of Madras, Presided by The Honorable Sri.M.A.Manickave

Worst experience... we have recently visited the O&G division for doctor opinion. The staff's behaviour was rude.. Doctors were very rude to the people. They are cursing pregnant ladies like anything. There is a way to explain everything and talk to patients in a friendly manner but here they are hurting people with their rudeness. There is no proper guidance where to go next.. Apart from the waiting hall there is no chair for pregnant ladies to sit. Initial checkup and doctor checkup everywhere pregnant ladies need to stand and wait, since there is a long waiting time. There are no basic requirements such as water for pregnant ladies inside the O&G OP ward.

The definition of apathy is - lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. Apathy is in full display here. Right from the Dean, HODs, Doctors & Interns to the office staff, helpers and watchmen. Most of the equipment is broken or unhygienically maintained. Doctors are rarely available. Patients are treated with such intense disdain that you wonder if "The Hippocratic oath" is not applicable here. The worst part is having to deal with the non-medical staff. The staff act like royalty and expect treatment and payment "royally". I have been given various reasons for the poor attitude of the doctors and staff but none of it is justifiable at all. I am told that things are much better if you know some doctor personally (Not sure of this). If you can avoid this place, please do. But if you have no other option, be ready for a traumatic experience.

Right from sweeppr demanding money. Right from nurses to doctors scolding poor people. The securty guards demanding money to let poor people in side the ward. Attenders demanding heavy money to transport dead persons from ward to mortuary and mortuary to Ambulance. Attenders demanding heavy money to carry peoples in strechers to operation theaters and scan room Higher officials are mere spectators. Health minister and honourable chier minister to intervene Vigiliance officers should conduct daily raids.

Treatment and care from the doctors are top notch 👌. But hospital cleanliness, hygiene and facilities for some emergency cases are not upto the level.. kind of worse.. It is really tough to keep clean a place with more than a lakh visitors everyday. But it is must to provide public a safe environment to build more trust.

All the super speciality available around the clock, but very congested place. For public car parking is very difficult and narrow pathway all around the hospital, for public no parking place so it's very difficult park the private vehicle inside the campus, Inside the campus cleanliness and sanitation need to improve public put dust all around the hospital premises. In the government hospital inside road is very bad condition so the worker difficult to shift the patient in the corresponding wards. Need to improve the security system.
