CII - Confederation of Indian Industry

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the development of India, partnering Industry, Government and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes.

CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization, with around 9000 members from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 300,000 enterprises from 286 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.

For more than 125 years, CII has been engaged in shaping India's development journey and works proactively on transforming Indian Industry's engagement in national development. CII charts change by working closely with Government on policy issues, interfacing with thought leaders, and enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and business opportunities for industry through a range of specialized services and strategic global linkages. It also provides a platform for consensus-building and networking on key issues.

Extending its agenda beyond business, CII assists industry to identify and execute corporate citizenship programmes. Partnerships with civil society organizations carry forward corporate initiatives for integrated and inclusive development across diverse domains including affirmative action, livelihoods, diversity management, skill development, empowerment of women, and sustainable development, to name a few.

As India completes 75 years of Independence in 2022, it must position itself for global leadership with a long-term vision for India@100 in 2047. The role played by Indian industry will be central to the country's progress and success as a nation. CII, with the Theme for 2022-23 as Beyond India@75: Competitiveness, Growth, Sustainability, Internationalisation has prioritized 7 action points under these 4 sub-themes that will catalyze the journey of the country towards the vision of India@100.

With 62 offices, including 10 Centres of Excellence, in India, and 8 overseas offices in Australia, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Singapore, UAE, UK, and USA, as well as institutional partnerships with 350 counterpart organizations in 133 countries, CII serves as a reference point for Indian industry and the international business community.

CII History:

The history of CII is the story of the transformation of a miniscule association, representing a small segment of industry, to the premier business association of modern India. The journey began in 1895 when 5 engineering firms, all members of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, joined hands to form the Engineering and Iron Trades Association (EITA).

Engineering and Iron Trades Association (EITA) - 1895

EITA was set up at the end of 1895 with the aim of pressurising the colonial government to place government orders for iron and steel and engineering goods with companies based in India. At that time the practice was to place all government orders with firms based in UK.

Indian Engineering Association (IEA) - 1912

The change in name from EITA to IEA in 1912 reflected the association's decision to exclude traders from the membership and concentrate fully on promoting the cause of manufacturers. By this time, many more manufacturers had come into being and there was a conflict of interest between traders, who preferred government orders to be placed with companies in the UK, and manufacturers of engineering goods, who sought industry promotion through public orders.

Engineering Association of India (EAI) - 1942

Till 1942 IEA was the only all-India association of engineering industry and represented mainly big engineering companies, particularly the British firms. This led to a situation where the interests of the Indian firms (mainly medium and small scale) were not sufficiently represented. Thus the Engineering Association of India (EAI) was established in 1942 as an affiliate of the Indian Chamber of Commerce. EAI represented small and medium engineering firms mostly owned and promoted by Indians, and had different origins and management styles from the IEA.

Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI) - 1974

After Independence of India in 1947, the public sector assumed the lead role in industrial development. By 1970s, a new base of heavy industries had been built, but private companies faced restrictions through licensing requirements for new units and /or expansion. Keeping in view the greater interests of the Engineering industry in the country, in April 1974, the two associations - IEA and EAI - merged to form the Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI). For the engineering industry the merger meant a stronger association capable of harnessing larger resources and providing a wider range of services.

Confederation of Engineering Industry (CEI) - 1986

Foreseeing the upcoming challenges in the future, the leadership at AIEI felt the need for greater consolidation and solidarity that would put the industry on a stronger footing and would help it meet the challenges of competition and globalisation. Thus in 1986 there was a change in name from AIEI to the Confederation of Engineering Industry (CEI), reflecting the growth and expansion of the organisation since 1974. CEI now became an apex body for manufacturing industries at the national level.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) since - 1992

In 1991, industrial licensing was abolished and economic reforms on a wide scale started taking shape. With effect from 1st January 1992, in keeping with the government's decision to opt for the liberalisation of the Indian economy, the name of CEI was changed to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). In a new policy environment, it was natural that there would be inter-sectoral integration through a process of diversification and expansion, where the engineering units would diversify into non-engineering units and vice-versa.

Since 1992, through rapid expansion and consolidation, CII has grown to be the most visible business association in India.

CII Leadership

Over the years, leaders at the helm of CII have proved themselves to be visionary industrialists. They have been able to anticipate changes in the economic environment, identify emerging challenges and evolve action-solutions for development. Brand India CampaignCII strives to Build Brand salience for India by positioning it as a "Globally Competitive and sound Investment destination and as a Reliable Partner to do business with."

Integrity India Campaign takes on the challenge of "working to improve probity in public life by putting the issue of Integrity on the front burner.

Under the leadership of Dr Jamshed J Irani, the Affirmative Action Task Force has brought out a detailed report on the Concrete Steps that industry would take voluntarily to intervene and bring into the mainstream the marginalized sections of our society, viz the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. This is the first time that Indian Industry has come together to undertake an initiative, which has far reaching implications and effects on Industry and on society at large.

CII Roles:

Our primary goal is to develop Indian industry and to ensure that government and society as a whole, understand both the needs of industry and its contribution to the nation's well being. For this, we work.

To identify and strengthen industry's role in the economic development of the country To act as a catalyst in bringing about the growth and development of Indian Industry To reinforce industry's commitment to society To provide up-to-date information and data to industry and government To create awareness and support industry's efforts on quality, environment, energy management, and consumer protection To identify and address the special needs of the small sector to make it more competitive To promote cooperation with counterpart organisations To work towards the globalisation of Indian industry and integration into the world economy.

This is done by adopting a proactive and partnership approach with the government on various national and international issues concerning the Indian economy. It closely interacts on policy issues at both the central and state levels. Extensive dialogue and interaction with members and all sections of the community to build consensus are held.

CII Strategies:

CII's strategies for holistic integration of industry with the needs of society are built around the four prongs of Key Initiatives / Information, global integration, commitment to society and competitiveness of industry. The common factor in all its activities is partnership across a cross-section of organizations, including government, non-governmental organizations and international bodies. Working with and learning from diverse institutions, CII has strengthened the services it provides to its members as well as society at large.

In an e-enabled world, economic well-being of nations and their people is determined by the degree of their integration with the global fraternity. As businesses have transcended frontiers, marked by the freer movement of people, goods, capital and information, international work processes have become more cohesive. Economic realignments and geo-political developments have brought in their wake opportunities as well as uncertainties.

CII International works towards providing our membership clearer strategies based on deeper insights and analytical perceptions of emerging realities. At the forefront in helping Indian business connect and interact with global business, CII has activated a multi-pronged strategy for global networking. Meeting heads of state and government, decision makers, networking with counterpart organisations, multilateral and academic institutions and other policy making bodies, CII's alternate diplomacy ensures continued access to emerging opportunities for its membership. The network of 9 overseas offices helps us disseminate vital information related to markets and joint venture possibilities to Indian and foreign companies.

Amongst the many landmark events organized by CII as part of its global business networking initiatives are the US-India Business Summit in New York, the EU-India Business Summits in Lisbon and New Delhi and the India Conference in Berlin. CII actively partners the United Nations across a wide range of initiatives in diverse fields aimed at integrating the developing world into the global economy. CII and UNDP jointly launched the India Partnership Forum which has a mandate to build societal capital based on a social vision shared between business, civil society and the government. Under the CII-UNIDO Institutional Agreement, a countrywide network of Subcontracting & Partnership Exchange (SPX) Centres has been established for the benefit of Indian SMEs. CII has long standing relationships with the World Economic Forum, UNDP, UNIDO, ADB, IFC & World Bank, USAID, Ford Foundation, The Aspen Institute and other business associations and think tanks. We also have a large number of institutional co-operation agreements with organisations like US-India Business Council, The Indo-British Partnership, Commonwealth Business Council, Singapore Business Federation, Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry and InfoComm Development Authority, Singapore.

India's economy is a mirror image of our pluralistic, democratic polity and is marked by heterogeneity of both character and scale. Policy related to one industry is more than likely to have an impact on several others in a domino like effect. The clear strategy here is to manage complementary and conflicting interests to the benefit of all concerned sectors. This is a task that CII's Agriculture, Manufacturing and Services Councils have performed with rare aplomb since their very inception. Better known collectively as ASCON (Associations Council), it walks the proverbial tightrope seeking to build consensus among its membership of 114 sectoral associations, 23 sector specific divisions and 14 committees. The single most important benefit of deliberations at an umbrella body like ASCON is the convergence of opinions and views. It provides members the much needed opportunity of exploring symbiotic inter-sectoral synergies.
